For applications where vehicles are traveling at highway speeds, minimally invasive strip sensors are used. These in-road sensors provide real time data to engineers and/or enforcement officials to monitor and police the traffic moving over roadways. Additionally, these strip sensors offer quick installation due to their low profile; a huge plus when considering the effects of lane closures. They’re also able to integrate into many existing systems where they can be monitored remotely for speed screening or simply used for data collection. While this type of WIM system is mainly used by DOT’s, other configurations are better suited for the needs of more commonplace weighing practices.
Low-speed Weigh-in-Motion systems offer the dynamic weighing benefits of high-speed systems, but with even higher accuracy. These systems are available as permanent in-ground solutions, or as portable systems for an efficient weighing operation anywhere. The in-ground low-speed WIM systems are right at home in any industry that needs to weigh a large number of vehicles fast and accurately. Industries like recycling, transportation, agriculture, etc. have all benefitted from the convenience low-speed WIM scales offer. With their smaller in-ground footprint, the amount of civil work needed for installation is kept to a minimum, making them a great alternative to large truck scales. They can also be hooked up to a variety of devices for attended or unattended use; as well as be used in static mode for weighing with an even higher degree of accuracy.
Weigh-in-Motion scales provide many benefits and are clearly engineered to be quite adaptable for many applications. With the accuracy of these systems continuing to improve, it is likely that this technology will become more widely used and adopted to increase operational efficiencies and make weight data gathering a more turn-key process.
